Seller Interview: Donna Firebaugh of Bowzee Wowzee

After selling Bowzee Wowzee in November of 2023, I sat down with Donna to talk about the process. It was an honor to work with her and I appreciate her willingness to share her experience with me (and you!)

When you started Bowzee, did you ever think you’d sell it? Did you have any thoughts on how you’d wrap up the business when the time came?

When I opened my business in 2006, my only goal was to provide exceptional pet care to pet owners at a fair rate. I never thought of the end result - to build a business that would entice someone to purchase it and yet here I am. The thought of selling my business never crossed my mind.

What were a few surprises about business and yourself that you learned operating Bowzee?

My clients were surprised to learn that I have an Associate and Bachelor’s degree in business. These degrees helped me in the business aspect but not hands on experience. The hands on taught me more than I could ever imagine. When operating this type of business, you have to gain the confidence of the owner and the pet (easy part), then the owner has to have faith that you will deliver what you promise.

What is your favorite thing about running a business?

First, the thousands of pet owners and dogs I have met over the course of 17 years. Laughter, tears shed , friendships and memories were made during this time.

Second, the fact that I knew the course of my business was taking. I was in charge of every decision that affected my business, I was all the CO’s in one person. I knew every day if I was financially stable and if not, I could change the direction immediately without anyone’s input.

What made you start thinking about selling your business?

I became serious about selling after the death of a family member. My son, who lives in Tampa was a very important piece of my decision. Our relationship was estranged for many years. We began the long process of mending our relationship which has ended in complete joy. I am happy to say my retirement will be living in Florida to continue this wonderful journey provided to us. How awesome is that!

Before this process, did you know anything about selling a business?

I did not know anything about this process. I prayed everyday about it because this was a life changing event and I needed help. Ultimately Patty entered the picture and she was the answer and help I needed. I am so thankful for her knowledge and expertise in this area.

What did you like about using a broker?

Patty took a real interest in me as a person and my business. She is quick to pick up on something that just doesn’t seem to fit. She will voice her concerns expecting a response. Patty works hard for her clients, respects her clients and goes well above the normal expectations.

People often don’t know the difference between a commercial, residential, and business broker. Speak to some of the frustrations about working with a commercial broker vs a business broker.

Commercial broker: No communication, no interest in you or your business, no follow-up, no offered advice or suggestions

Business broker: Communication, shows interest in you and your business, follows up, offers advice and suggestions. A business broker is a necessary element in a successful transaction. They take all the guesswork out of the equation leaving you with a sense of confidence and gives you a realistic expectation of what your business is worth. They also streamline inquiries so your time is not wasted on nonsense offers.

How do you feel like working with CATBiRD changed the outcome of your sale?

Oh my! Patty was a Godsend. She helped me realize my business had worth and was valuable. All the blood, sweat and tears through the years of building my business was profitable. Trust was built up by communication, offering suggestions, understanding my business and the end result I needed.

What was the hardest part about selling your business?

First, the new owner needed to understand that my office manager plays a big part of day to day operations and is not to be treated as just another employee.

Second, I hope that the new owner will continue the legacy of providing exceptional care and concern for our boarding guests.

Did you learn anything about yourself in the process?

I learned that I was really ready to sell and retire without any regrets or hesitation.

Tell me more about the importance of finding a “good fit” for your business.

It was important to me that the new owner would not “fake” an interest in my business. My clients and staff deserve the same or better quality care that I have provided throughout the years.

Tell me some of the ways selling your business will have an impact on your day to day life and next chapter (i know, it may be too early to answer this)

Since selling the business, I am ready to become more involved in my community making my home in Florida permanent. I am not living 2 separate lives which quite frankly was exhausting. I am planning an extended trip with a long time girlfriend. We are going to act silly, try new things (legal of course), jot down any new ideas that come to mind to develop insights to ourselves. Who knows what will happen but it’s going to be a blast finding out! Hahaha

You built a fantastic business over the years. Some unfairly equate selling a business to failure or distress. What would you say to the people who don’t understand why you’d sell such a successful business?

I lost interest in my business which is a sad thing to say. I did not want my business to suffer and have my clients disappointed because of this. I am ready to build a stronger relationship with my son, create new memories - laugh a lot - cry a little and just enjoy seeking out new adventures.

What advice would you give a business owner who is thinking about selling their business?

Hire Patty Dowdy immediately! Make a list of pros and cons, see which one wins and know when to move on. Then hire Patty Dowdy!

Would you recommend CATBiRD to a friend, and why?

Yes! Patty is genuine in helping and wanting the best for her clients. Communication is a huge factor and she gets it. Patty respects you as a person and does not waste your time or energy on nonsense. She handles all areas of representing your business, working behind the scenes and going well above any expectations you may have. I would hire Patty again without reservations.

Thanks again to Donna for her willingness to share her experience and high-fives to the buyer, Caryn who is fulfilling her long-time dream of owning a doggy daycare business.
